Guided Tours at the Defense Museum Boden

The Defense Museum Boden offers guided tours for school classes on weekdays throughout the year. These tours are free of charge, but an admission fee applies Not all tours are available year-round. Call us at +46 921 628 00 to check which ones we currently offer.

Schools from the municipality of Boden have free admission, while other school classes pay 40 SEK per student and 70 SEK per accompanying teacher. For groups of more than 20 people, a 20% discount is applied to the admission fee.

Make Soup from Nature

What does bark bread taste like? What does substitute coffee smell like? Just like in SVT’s Historieätarna, we take a step back in time to explore daily life in Boden during World War II. How did people dress? What did they eat? What did everyday items like vacuum cleaners and washing machines look like? We finish the visit by making potato waffles the way they did in the 1940s.

Grade: 3 and up

The Wartime Era in Norrbotten

What happened in Norrbotten during World War II? Join us for a tour focusing on 1939–1945 and learn about events you won’t find in history books. The tour begins with a specially produced film summarizing the international context of World War II.

Boden 120 Years Ago

What did Boden look like in the early 1900s? How did people live? What did they wear? And what new inventions changed their daily lives?

Duration: 20 minutes
Grade: 1–3

It’s in the Walls

Much of modern Boden is a legacy of the military model town built in the early 1900s. But what was here before the garrison? This tour explores the history of Boden and its military base.

Grade: 7 and up

Boden Fortress

What makes Boden Fortress unique? This tour covers the defense strategies of the early 1900s and the reasons behind building the fortress. We also explore border defense during wartime and how Sweden’s military strategies evolved throughout the 20th century.

Military Service – What Is It?

Learn about the 5.5 million Swedish men who served in the military between 1901 and 2010. Is military service still a thing today? How did it work, and how has Sweden’s defense evolved over time? We’ll also learn about terms like “solis,” “muck,” “kronvrak,” and “sothöns”.

Grade: 7 and up

A Cold Era?

A workshop based on our exhibition about the Cold War and its armed conflicts.
Prerequisites: Students should be familiar with terms like Cold War, nationalism, colonialism, decolonization, communist systems, democracy, dictatorship, and the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

Duration: 120 minutes
Grade: High school and adult education

Educational Material

The Key to Norrland's Lock is an educational resource developed for schools to complement the museum's main exhibition. It highlights significant events and developments from international, national, and regional perspectives.

The material is divided into four parts, and each part includes:

  • Educational content
  • Summary
  • Timeline
  • Worksheets
  • 1X2 questions

The material can be used both before and after a visit to the Defense Museum Boden.

The Key to Norrland's Lock is available as a class set for loan. Please note that the four booklets of educational content cannot be printed, but the summary, timeline, worksheets, and 1X2 questions are printable.

Försvarsmuseum Boden offers companies a unique opportunity for team building through our Military History Pentathlon. This activity combines teamwork, problem-solving, and historical challenges in an engaging and educational environment. It is perfect for staff groups looking to strengthen their cohesion while experiencing a memorable event with cultural and historical significance.

About the Activity

Join us for a Military History Pentathlon, where companies can book for staff groups or visitors. Participants will compete in smaller teams while engaging in a unique and historically rooted experience.

Duration

2.5 hours (including lunch)

Price

400 SEK per person. Minimum group size 10 people.

En dynamitvärmare, ett viktigt verktyg vid sprängarbeten i kalla klimat, för att hålla sprängämnen vid rätt temperatur för säker hantering.

Associations and groups are welcome to join our Norrlands Lås tour, where we explore the history of Bodens Fortress and its role in Swedish defense. Through a guided tour, you will gain a deeper understanding of the fortress’s significance during the 20th century and its role in Norrbotten’s defense preparations. A fascinating and educational experience for all history enthusiasts.

About the Activity

This tour focuses on Bodens Fortress—why was it built in Boden, and how was the construction carried out? We explore the military strategy at the turn of the century when the fortress was initiated, as well as its role during the preparedness period in Norrbotten throughout the 20th century.

Price

1,000 SEK per group + 70 SEK per person.
20% discount for groups larger than 20 people.
